Vasarely by Vasarely

I am more and more reluctant to use the terms ‘form’ and ‘colour’ separately, as designing until now separate notions. But in the matter of painting I submit that form and colour are not two, but one. The line, having only one dimension, is a fiction. It does not belong to one form, but two at the same time, it is a frontier, it does not engender form, it results from an encounter of forms-colours.
Henceforth form-colour: 1 = 2, 2 = 1, constitutes pastic unity.

Illustrated by 18 pictures, mostly oil paintings but also gouaches, tapestry and some pictures from international exhibitions, produced from 1949 to 1964.

All the examples of his work shown here are contained in a splendidly produced book about him recently published by Edition du Griffon, Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in the series Plastic Arts of the 20th century. (Introduction by Marcel Joray, texts and layout by Vasarely himself).
